On May 6, 2003, KLCS celebrated the local kick-off of the PBS KIDS Share a Story initiative – an unprecedented, multimedia public service campaign to help children develop language and literacy skills.

On June 14, 2003, KLCS invited the public to attend its inaugural “Share a Story with KLCS” event at Borders Books and Music in Glendale, California. About 100 children, parents, and teachers experienced a fun-filled afternoon of storytelling, crafts, and music. They also had an opportunity to meet Clifford the Big Red Dog and Leona from Between the Lions.

KLCS continues to use popular on-air and online programming to promote children’s literacy and inspire adults to help children develop language and literacy skills through daily activities. KLCS airs frequent messages between programs with fun and easy ways to share stories and build skills for children's reading success.

KLCS aired first-ever PBS KIDS Share a Story Talent Show on Memorial Day, featuring our friends from Dragon Tales, Cyberchase, Clifford the Big Red Dog, and Arthur.

This year, Share a Story with KLCS sponsored the 2004 Video in the Classroom (VIC) Focus Award: Using Video Production to Highlight Literary Works. Share a Story with KLCS encouraged teachers and students to use videomaking as a tool to develop students’ vocabulary, reading comprehension, phonemic awareness, and knowledge of narrative. Congratulations to the the 2004 Focus Award winners - The Big Wave by Rosewood Elementary School (Elementary) and The Outfit by Pacoima Middle School (Secondary). Catch the next issue of Teacher's TV Digest for details.

The 2004 VIC Awards ceremony was held on Saturday, June 5, 2004, followed by a reception for the awardees and their guests. Over 400 students, parents, and educators attended the ceremony. The ceremony will be televised on KLCS-TV/DT on Saturday, June 19, 2004, at 5:30 pm and Tuesday, June 22, 2004, at 10:30 am.

"Our participation in the Share a Story campaign is an outgrowth of our educational mission and adds a new dimension to our instructional support services beyond interactive, curriculum-based broadcasts, teacher and parent workshops, recognitions, and lesson-planning strategies. With the cooperation of our school, community, and business partners, we will seek to make children's literacy a vibrant component of everyday activities." – Janalyn Glymph, Ph.D., General Manager of KLCS-TV.
